About the Playwright

Letter to the Playwright from Patron

Tony and Cleo is a brilliant new play by San Diegan playwright Howard Rubenstein that tells the love story of Antony and Cleopatra, based on historical and primary sources and not on Shakespeare and seasoned with just the right amount of ancient Latin and ageless sex to enhance the story's authenticity.

Dear Howard,

We enjoyed Tony and Cleo greatly. You make a strong argument that Marc Anthony's sexual addiction especially with Cleopatra could have lead to the "first Citizen" and later "Augustus"
status for Octavius, and thus the end of the Republic and beginning of Imperial Rome. . . .  The sex was not at all gratuitous in the production and was absolutely essential in the telling of this ruinous affair. . . Entertaining and educational . . . at the same time.   Compliments to [the] entire company for their good work.
